Effect of Y2O3 on the Properties of Plasma Arc Coating on the Surface of Steel

In this paper, the intermetallic compound Fe3Al was prepared by plasma arc surface remelting, in which mixture of Al powder and Fe powder was coated on the surface of Q235 steel. Based on appropriate plasma arc process parameters, the variation of microstructure and the cracks in the coating with addition of different mass factor of Y2O3 by 0.0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9%, 1.2%, 1.5% was analyzed, and the effects of the addition of rare-earth element on the quality of the coating was investigated. The results show that the element Y mainly distributed in grain boundary, phase boundary or in precipitated phase, which can strengthen and clean the grain boundary, such that the coating can be toughened. The cracking resistance of the coatings can be significantly improved by adding Y2O3 and the optimum addition was 0.9%. With less amount of Y2O3, a few cracks occurred, while with excessive amount the inclusions occurred near the interface.
