Quantum information and computation are one of the fastest expanding areas of modern physics. The basic units of quantum computers are two state systems, usually called qubits, which states are superpositions of two basis states. Coherent coupling i.e., an entanglement of qubits is a key feature of quantum registers. We discuss two ways of entangling of distant stationary qubits via their interaction with quantized electromagnetic field: entanglement swapping and entanglement via a mediating resonator (called a “quantum bus”). In this review article we also discuss the influence of decoherence and show that entanglement survives in the presence of dissipation.
