Bulk 100 single crystal of SA of 120 mm length and 15 mm diameter was obtained in a period of 40 days using the modified SR method. The average growth rate is 3 mm/day, which is much higher when compared to those grown by conventional method (0.28 mm/day). The grown crystal is characterized by chemical etching (optical microscopy), UV-Visible and Vickers hardness studies. The comparative results of dislocation density, transmittance and hardness of SA crystals grown from conventional and modified SR methods are presented. The possible reasons for variation in the above parameters for crystals grown by modified SR method are discussed. Further, the data available in the literature is also used to assess the sanctity of modified SR method. The analysis establishes the simplicity and convenience of modified SR method to grow unidirectional bulk single crystals.
