Improving Performance in Mathematics and Science: A Case Study of High Schools in Local Municipalities of South Africa
South Africa is currently facing a skills crisis. Scarce skills areas like Engineering are being avoided by students joining the universities. This general limited pool of students in engineering remains one of the factors militating against the provision of scarce skills in gateway
fields including mathematics and sciences. Acquiring skills in these two major foundational subjects have proven to be the key to averting the impending crisis. This study presents an analysis of the needs of learners in high schools located in local municipalities of South Africa. An in-depth
look into the study reveals that learners easily loose interest owing to a lack of access to basic materials and technologies as needed for these subjects. Conclusions are drawn on the way forward towards improving performance in these key subjects.
