The Process Network-Building Among Active Aging Elderly People in Northeastern Thailand
The objective of this study was to exermine the social networks of active aging elderly people in northeastern Thailand. The data were collected from 20 elderly individuals who were registered in the intellectual tank program and possessed local wisdom. The first KI was selected among elderly individuals who had high attendance at organized events in Kalasin Province, Thailand. Then, the next KI was selected using the snowball sampling technique. The data were collected using in-depth interview and the semi-structured interview (SSI) technique, which includes interview guidelines and both participant and non-participant observation. The data were analyzed by content analysis with ATLAS.ti and presented in diagrams. The result showed the KI network building of relatives such as a child or a son-in-law as well as individuals who live in the same village, including a nearby sub-district and within the same district. They had the same beliefs and interests in organic farming, economic sufficiency and Thai herb usage. The their ultimate goal was to improve the quality of life. Shared activities included knowledge transfer, consultation and resource exchange. In addition, they mutually benefitted from inherit knowledge, reduced cost, increased income, health and self-reliance. These elements have underpinned the active aging concept explored in this study.
