Foreign Policy Revisited: Reorientation of Indonesian Foreign Policy Towards Southeast Asian Under Presidency of Susilo Bambang Yudoyono
Since Indonesia’s independence in 1945, Indonesian foreign policy has placed Southeast Asia as strategic region in the achievement of Indonesian national interests. Indonesia has played an important role in the regional development and the growth of ASEAN. But the impact of economic crisis 1997/1998, the increasing of internal conflicts and the rise of indonesian terrorism activities had lowered the role of indonesia in ASEAN. This research focuses on the change of Indonesian foreign policy orientation under Susilo Bambang Yudoyono’s (SBY) Administration in Southeast Asia. The foreign policy change it aims to analyze the domestic and regional factors influence the change of Indonesian foreign policy in the region and how the Asian crisis economic 1997/1998 has contributed to the reorientation of the SBY’s foreign policy in the region. Qualitative analysis and literature review methods are used in this research. The data were collected in several libraries and several institution in Indonesia and primary data were collected through interviews from academicians, political actors especially foreign diplomats and observers which relevant in the issues. This research assumed that unlike the previous presidents of Indonesia which more focus on ASEAN, SBY administration tried to play an important role in international arena rather than more focus to ASEAN in order to achieve the Indonesian national interests.
