Research Needs of Faculty: A Case of One College of Nursing in the Philippines
Research is one of the most essential functions in any institution. It is in this regard that faculty members, as the primary producers and facilitators of knowledge, must engage themselves in research. However, there are only five completed faculty researches from August 2007 to June 2012 in one College of Nursing in Central Luzon. Through focus group discussion, this study explored the needs of nursing faculty members in their quest towards coming up with research outputs and the reasons behind the limited number of researches in their college. The researcher used a qualitative case study to gain a thorough understanding and description of the informants’ research-related needs. Three full-time, tenured nursing faculty members were purposively nominated by the college dean and were included in the study. Three themes emerged from the group interview data: Poverty in Research: An Endemic Case and A Dragging Factor, Motivations to Active Research Involvement, and Addressing the Needs. The findings suggest that the University must address faculty members’ needs with regard to research production, publication, and utilization. Lack of knowledge, skills, and confidence in research were the major reasons for the limited number of research outputs in the College due to poor research foundation in the undergraduate and graduate levels. Academic leaders and administrators should strengthen students’ research capabilities by placing the most competent and knowledgeable faculty in terms of research to fully enhance students’ research competencies.
