Mesoporous Spherical Shaped Silica Nanoparticles for the Effective Adsorption of Aqueous Lead (Pb2+)

In this paper, mesoporous spherical shaped silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) with uniform size of 80 nm were synthesized by ultrasonication method via sol–gel process. These MSNPs were further used for the adsorption of lead (Pb2+) from water. The particles size and surface morphology was examined by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Functional group and surface properties of MSNPs were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and zeta potential techniques. Lead concentration adsorption on monodispersed MSNPs were examined at different pHs, MSNPs dose and Pb2+ concentration [at MSNPs dose: 0.3 g/L; Pb2+ concentration: 50 mg/L; shaking speed: 200 rpm; and equilibrium time: 60 min]. The removal competence of Pb2+ ions was increases with increased in the adsorbent dose. The maximum Pb2+ removal was obtained at solution pH 6.0 within 60 min.
