Predicting the Role of Husband’s Supportive Attitude and In-Laws Towards Marital Adjustment Among Married Women

Marital adjustment is an important area of research as it promotes emotional stability, intellectual efficiency, and social effectiveness. In general, however, there has been relatively little research in identifying the contributing factors in marital adjustment. Therefore, the present study intents to investigate the contribution of psychological variables (husband’s supportive attitude, experience with in-laws and marital adjustment) in marital adjustment among married women. The total sample consisted of 100 married women. The duration of marriage range from newly married up to 10 years. Indigenous scale was developed to measure husband’s supportive attitude and experience with in-laws whereas marital adjustment was assessed using adaptive instrument; marital happiness questionnaire. The study used the correlational design method with purposive sampling strategy. The result of the data analysis indicates that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between experience with in-laws, husband’s supportive attitude and marital adjustment. The regression analysis showed that husband’s supportive attitude merely was predicting marital adjustment. Hence, these finding supports the conclusion that the present study can provide useful guidance for marital counselling that can improves the level of satisfaction and longevity among married women thus, reduces the probability of divorce and separation.
