Kernel-Level File System for Minimizing File Modification Overhead

When a deletion or an insertion is performed even for a single character in a file, a block containing that character and the following blocks should be updated to reflect the change. This phenomenon occurs while storing a stream of bytes into a set of blocks, which causes large number of block I/O operations and, in turn, results in a drop in system performance. The proposed system provides efficiency by preventing those blocks except ones with the changes from reallocating. The key idea of this system is to adapt variable-size block that contains fraction of bytes data. In kernel-level, we modified I-node information to support variable-block by adding variable block information and block location. We designed the proposed system as a set of library functions and necessary data structures to mimic the traditional file system and, as the first part of the study, conducted experiments to evaluate the effect of variable length blocks to I/O performance.
