Enhanced Archive Format Using Data Chunking Scheme

Recently, digital files are more and more increasing and needs huge size storage system. To deal with this problem, several storage system adapt novel data processing techniques including data compaction, deduplication and distributed file system. In this paper, we propose an archive format that efficiently deals with data files by exploiting data chunking scheme. The key idea of this paper is to adapt a variable-length chunking approach for building an archive file. With this approach, we can store unique data chunk only, therefore, requirement for data storage capacity will be reduced. In the experiment result, the proposed system shows that the requirement of storage size is dramatically reduced. For text file type, the proposed system shows less performance enhancement compared to TAR with gzip option. However, for binary data file type, the proposed system outperforms TAR with gzip option. In terms of processing time, the proposed system needs slightly more computation time than TAR approach.
