The Effect of Counseling on Knowledge and Behavior of Leprosy Patients at UPTD Cibuaya, Kabupaten Karawang West Java

Background: West Java comes as the third biggest Province in Indonesia with leprosy cases. The incidence of the new cases, particularly in Karawang, in 2014 were 273 patients or 0.71 per 10,000 populations. The number of disability for grade 1 and 2 were 18% and 12% respectively. Lack of adequate information caused the common misperception, which lead to a stigma to the leprosy patients. This research aimed to determine the effect of counseling on knowledge and behavior of leprosy patients in UPTD Cibuaya, Karawang regency. Method: The quasi-experimental design of one group pretest-posttest, without control was used in this study. The samples were 73 leprosy patients. The instrument used was questionnaires. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately. Result: The knowledge of respondents after the intervention increased from 6.8% to 93.7%. The respondents were mostly (54.8%) categorized as not good in behavior. There was a significant enhancement on knowledge (p = 0.001) and behavior (p = 0.001) after the counseling. Conclusion: There were significant increases in knowledge and behavior after the counseling on leprosy patients in UPTD Cibuaya, Kabupaten Karawang,West Java. Regular health promotion and education about leprosy as well as counseling for families with leprosy patients, are recommended.
