How Traditional Fishermen Prevent Accidents in Semarang Residential

Background: Fishing at the sea is probably the most dangerous occupation in the world. There is no safety standard for a traditional vessel under 24 m. Many hazards faced by the fishermen when they worked. Fishermen at Semarang Residential work with no standard safety equipments. So how do they prevent accidents? Method: The research was a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Data were obtained from in-depth interviews on 8 Tambakrejo fishermen and 5 Mangunharjo Fishermen at Semarang Residential. Data were analyzed by content analysis. Results: The level of Fishermen education was low and they also had low income. They faced many hazards on the sea. Furthermore, they suffered accident like hand injuries, hand cut by machine, slip from the vessel and musculoskeletal disorders. There was no training in safety program for them. They prevented themselves from the accident by their experience because they only used minimal and traditional personal protective equipment. Conclusion: Fishermen accepted the danger from their occupation but some did not take the risk as the serious problem. To change their unsafe behavior, collaboration with their leader is needed to learn their accident experience. It was the preliminary step to develop educational materials with a cultural approach.
