Knowledge Improvement for Wound Management on Fishermen at Pagedangan Ilir Village, Tangerang Regency
Background: Two thirds of Indonesian territory is ocean. Data on 2011 showed that 30% of 67 million workers in informal sector were fishermen. Fishermen community had high risk work and their work safety awareness was limited. Based on data from the Kronjo community health center
emergency room in November–December 2015, there were five cases of work related injuries in fishermen. Therefore, some interventions is needed to reduce the incidence of occupational wound complication. Method: This study used Blum’s paradigm to identify the cause of the
problem and the design was quasi-experimental intervention. Samples were collected by purposive non-random sampling method on the fishermen who lived in Pagedangan Ilir village. Interviews using questionnaires were conducted to collect the data. Lack of knowledge was found as the cause of
the problems, then health education and wound management training program (NEPITALU) were implemented. Results: The intervention results on 58 fishermen showed an increased knowledge by 34.48%. Chi square analysis showed that there was no association between the group and their knowledge
improvement (p-value= 0.447). However, it was obtained that the subjects who had poor prior knowledge may improved their knowledge 1.8 times (OR = 1.851; 95% CI = 0.588–5.830). All of the fishermen who followed the NEPITALU training program were able to repeat the managements
correctly. Conclusion: The given intervention could increase the knowledge of the fishermen. Health education and NEPITALU program are recommended to be implemented to reduce the incidence of occupational wound complication.
