Pregnant Woman Mentoring by Public Health Students to Increase Community Participation

Background: Maternal Death in Indonesia, including in Semarang City is very high. There was 1 maternal death in the working area of Puskesmas Rowosari, Semarang City. To prevent maternal mortality, Faculty of Public Health Diponegoro University implement a mentoring program for pregnant women in the working area of Rowosari Primary Healthcare Center. This study aimed to investigate the effect of this program in increasing the community participation. Methods: This action research was conducted by providing a mentoring to pregnant women during 2013–2015. The study population were 407 pregnant women in 2013–2015. The primary data were obtained from all pregnant women in the study area by interviews and documents’ observations. The increase number of Child and Mother Health Handbook use and the signed stickers fixation of Delivery Planning Complications’ Prevention Program (P4K) on outside wall of their houses were considered as community participation indicators. Results: This three-year mentoring program has increased not only MCH handbook ownership from 73.87% in 2013 to 89.13% in 2015 but also the P4K sticker fixation on outside walls of the mothers’ house from 44.76% in 2013 to 54.76% in 2015. Conclusion: The mentoring program on pregnant women has increased community participation in preventing maternal mortality.
