The Malaysian Science Teachers’ Readiness and the Effectiveness of Professional Development Course for the Implementation of ‘Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3’
The current assessment reform and the teachers’ ability to implement the new assessment effectively have drawn the attention of many stakeholders in Malaysia. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the Malaysian science teachers’ readiness to implement the Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3), the courses that they have attended and the effectiveness of the course that helped them to carry out the assessment. The study employed the qualitative research design and purposively selected a total of 20 science teachers from various schools in Malaysia to be the sample of the study. The data of the study were gathered mainly through the semi-structured interviews and supported by document analysis. The findings revealed: (i) majority of the science teachers were not ready to implement PT3 when it was first introduced (ii) despite having limited time, they were able to attend a few courses and training prior carrying out the PT3 (iii) to certain extent, the training they received helped the teachers to implement the PT3. Nonetheless, more extensive and comprehensive trainings are required to help them to carry out the assessment effectively. The study suggested that, a better training module should be used to help science teachers in Malaysia to implement the PT3. The monitoring for standardization of in-house training should be carried out to ensure the information is well-disseminated among science teachers. Consistently, Ministry of Education should focus on improving teachers’ professional development as it gives a significant impact on perpetuating the national’s aspiration in education.
