Spatial Organization of Korean Traditional Residence Based on Domestic Religion Towards Succession to the Modernized Hanok

Korean traditional residences has been built with deep considerations for various values such as social, religious and cultural influences to be started 6000 years ago, and completed its form in late Chosun Dynasty, but its meaning is being vanished due to the different social environments these days. It is necessary, therefore, to grasp the meaning of the Korea traditional building and understand religious emotions of Korean people called domestic religion. The purpose of this study is to determine some reasons why the form of the traditional housing structure shows as connected to the domestic religion rooted deeply in Korea traditional architecture. For this research, a few analytical methods are utilized to analyze shamanistic values connected to residential spaces, to propose qualitative design factors of New-Hanok inherited from the traditional residential architecture, and to suggest sound guidelines for finding right directions towards succession to the future Hanok. As a result, this paper suggests how the domestic religions in Korea have affected the spatial configuration of the traditional dwellings.
