This paper has aimed to study the development of Video Arts in Malaysian Contemporary Arts. Referring to this study, the definition of the video arts category has hardly been defined. This is the crucial reason why contemporary art practitioners amongst Malaysian artists have not involved
in video arts. Employing the content analysis approach as the main research method, the study has developed successfully, categories for 4 types of video arts with certain characteristics, which are Sculpture/Installation Video, Guerilla Video, Video and Theatre and Video and Computer Technologies.
This paper has collected 5 electronic art exhibitions in Malaysia from 1997 until 2012, which include 10 video artists being studied. This study has found out that video sculpture and installation are the most practiced in Malaysian Contemporary Video Arts. It is useful for the subject ‘Time-Based
Media Art,’ which can help the students and young emerging artists to develop their understanding towards the making of video works in the context of Malaysian Contemporary Visual Arts.
