Study of Structural and Optical Properties of ZnS:Cu Nanoparticles

Nano-zinc sulphide and Cu-doped zinc sulphide has been synthesized by a chemical process. The structural characterization has been done using XRD and TEM. The average size of the particles observed was 5 nm for ZnS:Cu nanoparticles. Optical studies including photoluminescence have been carried out by means of Uv-Vis spectrophotometer. It was found band gap increase with increase in doping concentration. The absorption edge shifts towards the lower value of wavelength (higher energy) with an increase in concentration of Cu. The photoluminescence spectra of ZnS:Cu nanoparticles gives a green emission peak centered around 500 nm in agreement with earlier results in ZnS nanostructures. The green emission arises from the recombination between the shallow donor level (sulphur vacancy) and the T2 level of Cu2+.
