Thermal Behavior of PMMA and Prediction of Activation Energy of Phase Transition Using Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) and Arrhenius Equations
The present paper reports the investigations of thermal behavior of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymeric sample. The viscosity of PMMA is obtained measuring storage and loss modulus using the dynamic mechanical analyzer technique. The phase transition temperature (Tg
)
is determined through the temperature at which the minimum of temperature derivative curve of viscosity falls. The activation energy of phase transition has been obtained by employing the Vogel-Fulchar-Tammann (VFT) equation. Beside this, Hot Disk Thermal Constants Analyzer based on Transient
Plane Source (TPS) technique is used to evaluate thermal conductivity of the sample from 303 K (room temperature) to 393 K beyond its Tg
value. These thermal conductivity values are used as thermally activated parameter in Arrhenius equation for calculating activation energy
of phase transition. This study reveals that the viscosity decreases on increasing the temperature whereas thermal conductivity increases. The activation energy evaluated through both the above said approaches is observed in good agreement.
