This paper presents a design and implementation of hierarchical authentication system which aims to properly applicable to the smart education environment with large number of users. To process a large number of authentication requests, the proposed system adapts the cloud-based virtual server architecture. In addition, a database synchronization scheme between the central system and the regional systems is established to enable a backup process on taking place failures. Moreover, users can keep on accessing an educational content at anywhere, with a hierarchical authentication scheme among the regional authentication systems of educational institutions spreading in national wide. The proposed system is expected to provide a basement to allow smart education users to access to the digital training materials with mobile devices at anytime, anywhere, even easy to use. It could be used as a basis of new wireless authentication systems for future smart learning environment.
