Kinetics and Thermodynamics Studies of Extraction of Ce(III) from Acidic Nitrate Medium Using Cyanex 921 in Kerosene

The kinetics of extraction of Ce(III) from acidic nitrate medium using Cyanex 921 as extractant in kerosene has been investigated. The effect of various parameters such as nitric acid, nitrate ion, extractant and metal ion concentration on the rate of extraction has been analysed. From temperature variation experiments it was observed that temperature had a negative influence on the extraction. The negative values of entropy change ensured involvement of complex formation reaction in the extraction with decrease in randomness and negative values of enthalpy change showed that the extraction was exothermic. The decrease in free energy confirmed the spontaneity of the extraction process. The obtained data on extraction have been used to develop a mathematical model based on the dependence of rate of extraction on time lag using delay differential equation. The rate constants are also determined by using ordinary differential equation and these have been compared.
