Existence of Cu1+ and Cu2+ Oxidation States for the Occurrence of Ferromagnetismin Zn0.95Cu0.05O

Oxidation states of Cu in +1 and +2 in Zn0.95Cu0.05O has been confirmed through X-ray photoelectron studies and the presence of oxygen vacancies in form of clusters is confirmed from micro-Raman analysis. The widened nature of Raman peak at around 582 cm–1 clearly demonstrates that oxygen vacancies are not present in singly but they are in form of clusters. The exchange interaction between the Cu ions mediated by oxygen vacancies clusters is the prime reason for the observation of room temperature ferromagnetic behavior in Cu doped ZnO compounds.
