Design and Development of India's First Rubber Dam

Nowadays there is sudden change in Precipitation and thereby runoff due to aberration in climate. To combat the sudden flood flow or sudden drought due to low precipitation it was proposed to construct such structure which will automatically close and open at time of need and cost prohibitive in comparison to any concrete dam. For this the rainfall was analyzed on probabilistic basis and runoff was calculated using curve number technique. The water level and velocity of the stream was recorded and helped in optimum design of check dam. Accordingly the rubber sheet was fabricated into shape of rubber dam. The length of dam varies from 1.6 m to 6.8 m. The anchoring angle was determined by finite element analysis. The size of bolt and pressure variation was determined from prototype test and field test. The adhesive used was determined from different combination of available adhesive in market. For raising dam height more than 1 meter pressure required was more than 1 kg/cm2 i.e., 1.2 kg/cm2. For the first time in India the installation technology of rubber dam was developed and fitted in three places. The inflation and deflation time was recorded. The dam has been inflated and deflated according to the requirement of farmer and the minimum life of the Dam is 25 years.
