Green Technology: Comparison of Thermal Comfort Levels for Two Traditional Bugis Houses in Malaysia

Traditional houses are often regarded as ideal architectural solution in respond to hot and humid climate. However, these houses are rapidly being replaced by modern ones. Consequently, it is important to record the thermal comfort levels of the houses as guidelines for future residential designs. This research investigates the thermal comfort levels in two Bugis traditional houses in Johor, with similar design and orientation. Daeng Hadadek's house (DHH) has concrete tiles for its roofing materials, whilst Daeng Mapunah's house (DMH) has zinc roof. Data loggers measurement units were set-up in several locations in both houses, including the porches. Other factors, such as the wall and opening designs, and the immediate contexts were also considered. DHH was found to provide better diurnal and nocturnal air temperatures compared to DMH. However, some other external factors also influence the indoor temperatures both during the day and night time for some of the rooms.
