Effect of Micro-Nano MSW Incinerator Ashes on the Compressive Strength of Mortar

This study aims to investigate various micro-nano and non micro-nano MSW incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash (BA) and fly ash (FA) replacement ratios for sand in mortar for aggregate use potential at several FA/BA mixing ratios and three sintered temperatures. X-ray powder diffractometer analyses showed that MSWI ashes contained Al2O3, CaCO3, Ca(OH)2, SiO2, Ca3SiO5, CaMg(CO3)2, Ca2 SiO4, PbO and ZnS. Compressive strengths of all sintered samples were found higher at 1200 °C and lower at 800 °C compared to control. The highest compressive strength was found to be 28.52 MPa compared to 16.71 MPa of the control at 7 days curing. Most micro-nano MSWI FA and BA substitution at 1200 °C could increase compressive strength while all samples at 800 °C reduced compressive strength significantly suitable for controlled low strength materials (CLSM). TCLP results showed that Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb released levels of all sintered samples did not exceed the TCLP regulatory standard indicating the potential for aggregate utilization.
