Effect of Annealing Temperature on Pd–B/γ-Al2O3 Activity and Selectivity for Palm Oil Hydrogenation
Palladium–boron catalyst was prepared by chemical reduction of palladium supported on γ-alumina. It was annealed at different temperatures, then applied for hydrogenation of palm oilat 393 K, 5 bar and 500 rpm for 1 hour. The catalyst samples were characterized using the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas (BET), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was determined that the annealing temperature affected the morphology, surface area and pore diameter of the catalyst. The conversion and selectivity toward oleic acid, stearic acid and trans fatty acids formation noticeably changed by increasing the annealing temperature. The catalytic behavior for hydrogenation of edible oils can be modified through regulating the catalyst annealing temperature.
