Treatment of Cr(VI) Using Polyvinyl Alcohol-Alginate Ferro Photo Gels Under Different Types of Lamps

The purpose of this research is to treat waste water containing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-alginate ferro photo gels under different types of light source; Xenon lamp, Black Light Bulb (BLB) lamp, Light Emiting Diode (LED) lamp and fluorescent lamp. The PVA-alginate ferro photo gels consist of maghemite nanoparticles embedded in PVA and alginate and they were placed in a vessel containing the water containing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Results revealed removal of Cr(VI) was best under Xenon lamp; 100% removal in 100 minutes, followed by BLB lamp; 70% removal in 100 minutes. LED and fluorescent lamp have about the same removal rate; 50% removal in 100 minutes.
