Implant Magnification Algorithm for Biomedical Images in Digital Total Hip Arthroplasty Preoperative Planning
Magnification is a part of geometric transformation and is used to change the perceived size of an object, whether it be to enlarge it or to reduce it. Object magnification is typically used in computer graphics. This paper discusses the techniques and algorithms that can solve the problem of scaling in the medical field which involves the use of digital biomedical images and implants. In the medical field, scaling techniques are used by surgeons during preoperative planning. For the method of manual templating, the surgeon faces two different magnified image scales, namely, the X-ray scale and the implant (template) scale. To match the digital implant and X-ray images with the computer screen, the pixel ratio between computer display and the digital X-ray images of patients are generated using the resolution information and X-ray image pixel density. The pixel ratio is then used in a magnification algorithm to enlarge or reduce the size of a digital implant. The results show that digital implants can be accurately scaled using the implant magnification algorithm discussed in this paper. In addition, by using a digital implant with high resolution, X-ray image enlargement can be up to 100% successful without affecting the image of the digital implant.
