The downlink performance of distributed antenna systems (DAS) with multiple receive antennas in Rayleigh fading multicell environment is presented in this paper. On the basis of analyzing the system performance, utilizing the moment generating function, we derive the probability density function (PDF) of the effective signal to interference plus noise ratio of the system. Based on this PDF, an exact bit error rate (BER) expression of DAS with multiple quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) is derived, and a tight BER approximation of DAS with multiple phase-shift keying (MPSK) is also derived. As a result, closed-form expressions of the average BER of DAS are obtained. The derived expressions can provide good theoretical performance evaluation for DAS. Computer simulation shows that the theoretical analysis can match the simulation result very well.
