Technological innovation is conceptualized as an evolutionary, path dependent and interactive knowledge search of optimal alternatives to identify and solve technical problems. Three dimensions of knowledge search behaviors are investigated—search type, search focus and search dynamics—and indexes based on patent data are developed and measured. Innovation strategies in the optical memory devices industry are discovered using data relative to 438 patents granted between 1975 and 2004 to 15 leading innovating firms.
