A Numerical Simulation of Elastic Waves for Defect Detection in Composite Plates
This study presents numerical simulations of elastic waves for detecting symmetrically or non-symmetrically aligned defects in a thin epoxy adhesive layer connecting two aluminum plates. For the numerical simulations, a two dimensional plane model is constructed, and an element size
and time increment are properly selected to acquire stable explicit dynamic analyses, which are carried out through a general purpose finite element program. Three different defect scenarios are applied to the composite plate by controlling the size and deterioration of a part or whole of
the epoxy layer. Two-point excitation method is applied for baseline-free defect detection by arranging two excitation points and one reception point at the upper part of the composite plate. From the elastic-wave propagation simulation, it is shown that two-point excitation method is also
applicable to the composite plates not just because of identification but also quantification capability of the target defects. Unlike non-symmetrically aligned defects, it is found that, in the case of the symmetrically aligned defects, two-point excitation method requires a baseline, which
is against its potential. However, because of lacking of symmetric defects in the nature, the method holds its potential in most cases.
