In order to improve the thermal efficiency of IC engine, also realize the aim of energy saving and emission reduction, an approach of IC engine exhaust gas energy recovery was proposed based on Rankine steam cycle and the thermodynamic processes were studied. Firstly, according to exhaust gas characteristics of a passenger car engine, the bottom cycle model was established. Then, the test data of IC engine exhaust gas were taken as bottom cycle boundary conditions, and cycle processes were calculated by using the method of subsection interpolation fitting on computer. Next, the relationship among system performance and design parameters as well as operating parameters was studied. Finally, the theoretical limit of exhaust gas energy recovery, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of applying this bottom cycle on recovering IC engine exhaust gas energy were elaborated. The results show that IC engine power and thermal efficiency can be theoretically improved by 9.7% and 27% respectively after using this bottom cycle system under common condition. All that can prove it is a new technology with lots of potential, and give a method to design the energy recovery system.
