Detrended Fluctuation Analysis in Machine Condition Diagnosis
The vibration signal generated in a gearbox is complex because the signal is influenced by vibrations from the meshing gears, shafts and bearings etc. The signal generated in an abnormal gear may be non-stationary or may have an underlying correlation. This paper reports on the application of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) to diagnose automobile transmission gearbox conditions. A gearbox test was conducted, and the vibration signals were collected under different conditions. DFA was applied to process the gear signals and both the fluctuation function and the scaling exponent were extracted, which served as detectors to determine changes in gearbox conditions. We found that the detectors varied with the gear degradation and under different gear conditions, the fluctuation function curves reflected distinct condition features and the scaling exponent increased with the degradation of the gear. The fluctuation function and the scaling exponent showed high sensitivities to the changes in the gear conditions both graphically and quantitatively. The presented example demonstrates that DFA can be potentially used in machine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis.
