A Dynamic Detuning Method for Regulating Transferred Power to Inductively Coupled Power Transfer Pickups

This paper presents a method for regulating the transferred power to ICPT pickups. A phase-controlled variable inductor is dynamically swithched to detune the resonant circuit according to the actual power requirements of the power pickup. The equivalent values of the detunned circuit are derived out with fundamental component ac analysis. Effect of the detuning inductance in regulating the transferred power is systematically analyzed. The resonant circuit parameters are deliberately selected in favor of actual control accuracy. Soft switching is achieved in controlling variable inductor, power losses are reduced significantly. With the proposed method, the maximum power transfer capability is unaffected. The numeric corresponding relationship between load variation and delay angle is deduced out. Simulation results show that with the proposed method, a significant improvement is achieved in regulating transferred power under variable load ratings.
