Combustion Synthesis and Characterization of the Eu Doped Y2O3 Nanoparticles

Research on nanoparticles has gained tremendous importance during the past few years and led to intense investigations with extensive application in several diverse fields. In this paper, we report on the synthesis of luminescent Y2O3:Eu nanoparticles with the cell biologic implication in imaging the cells and characterize subcellular organelles. Combustion synthesis process was used at a low temperature 150–200 °C to obtain particulate sizes ranging from the 30 nm to 150 nm, determined by the transmission electron microscopic observations. The nanopowder showed predominant red luminescence upon ultraviolet light exposure. The structure, phase and morphology of nanopowder were interpreted by the high resolution Transmission Electron Microscopic, Scanning Electron Microscopic and X-Ray Diffraction data where as red luminescence and optical properties were studied by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra analysis. This property of red light emitting nanoparticles makes it more suitable for the bio-tagging and bio-imaging.
