Paleoclimatic Implication of Temperature-Dependence of Susceptibility of Tianshan Loess, Central Asia

Magnetic properties of loess in both the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) and Europe have been widely investigated, with fruitful results. However, systemic studies of magnetic properties of loess in Central Asia are lacking, which hampers our understanding of paleoclimatic changes in the Asian interior. Mineral magnetic investigations of loess samples of Tianshan, Central Asia, are reported in this paper. The methods used include the temperature-dependence of susceptibility as well as X-ray diffraction analysis of magnetic extracts and heavy minerals. These results indicate that magnetic minerals in Tianshan loess mainly consist of magnetite, hematite, ilmenite, and possibly maghemite. The main contribution to magnetic susceptibility is magnetite, which is similar to that of loess in the CLP, Siberia and Europe. The dry and higher evaporation climatic conditions cause weak chemical weathering and biological processes, which are unfavorable to pedogenic processes. Thus, pedogenesis cannot explain the magnetic enhancement; the coarse magnetite grains contribute significantly to magnetic susceptibility, which is probably related to the allochthonous magnetic input.
