Excellent Photocatalytic Activity of Mixed Phase Ultra Slim TiO2 Nanofibers for the Degradation of Organic Wastes

The photocatalytic degradation of the organic dyes has been performed in the presence of ultra slim (10–20 nm diameters) titanium dioxide (TiO2 nanofibers synthesized through low-temperature sol–gel technique in organic medium. The calcination of the prepared fibers in air at 500 °C for 3 hrs led to a mixture of almost 50% anatase and 50% rutile phases that exhibited higher photocatalytic activities due to a synergistic effect. The TiO2 fibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The photodegradation of different dyes like orange-II (acid orange 7), methyl orange (acid orange 52) and rhodamine B were studied which followed the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) kinetic model with pseudo-first-order apparent rate 4.15×10–2, 7.72×10–2 and 3.53×10–2 min–1. Particularly the mixed phase TiO2 nanofibers exhibited superior photodegradation performance for the rhodamine B, which completely degraded at only 120 mins.
