Studies on the Dynamic Process of Seed-Mediated Silver Nanoparticles Growth by Optical Waveguide Lightmode Spectroscopy
We reported a study to monitor the silver nanoparticle seeds attaching and following growth process on the mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane modified metal-oxide titanium dioxygen-silica dioxygen waveguide surface by use of Optical Waveguide Lightmode Spectroscopy (OWLS). The dynamic process of seed-mediated silver nanoparticle growth was directly recorded by means of Refractive Index measurement of OWLS in different seed concentrations. The refractive index decreasing and the thickness increasing of the waveguide film were observed along with the growth of silver nanoparticle. The results of OWLS measurement show that the seedmediated silver nanoparticle grew dramatically in 10 min. The behaviors of silver nanoparticle growth were related to their seed concentration, and the dynamic change of optical property of waveguide film was identified. The seeds grew to nanorods in the low concentration, while they formed nano-film of big nanoparticles in the high concentration. The results were further proved with ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra and atomic force microscopy. Optical Waveguide Lightmode Spectroscopy provides an approach to characterize the optical property of seed-mediated silver nanoparticles growth, which helps us to understand the factors that control the growth of silver nanoparticles in the solid surface.
