Solvent Free Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Activity of α-Fe2O3 Nanomaterial

Wormlike hematite (α-Fe2O3) was successfully fabricated by thermal decomposition of ferric nitrate without using solvent or template in large scale. The synthesized hematite was characterized by using SEM, XRD, HRTEM, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis. The influence of decomposition temperature and time on the final morphology was investigated and the results were discussed. The catalytic activity of synthesized hematite in catalytic ozonation process was examined by using 2-Ethoxy Ethanol Acetate (2-EEA) as a model pollutant. The catalytic ozonation experiment indicated that the synthesized hematite was a potential candidate for environmental remediation process. Based on the experimental results, a plausible mechanism for wormlike hematite formation has been proposed.
