Portugal has been hit with a long lasting economic crisis. In this context, a generation of architects and designers has been continuing to produce interesting and different work in comparison to the previous generation. We have looked into how they have adapted to uncertainty and applied their techniques into teaching design studios. We call them Tactics. As applied in business, protest or military contexts we understand them as actions for survival. A set of different skills to be ignited one or more at any time - or not at all - allowing change and adaptability in the design process. We teach with our students not as experts instructing apprentices but together in a generative experimental environment with no predictable outcomes. New models of practice, attempts to work with low budgets, tight schedules and increasingly multidisciplinary approaches are being applied as teaching methods in design studios. We are preparing students for uncertain times.
