From Marginal to Mainstream? Analysing Translations between the Collaborative Housing Niche and the Established Housing Sector in Finland

This paper focuses on the interaction between collaborative housing projects and the established housing sector. While collaborative housing is increasingly seen as a promising housing model, its impact on the wider housing system has remained under researched. This paper traces translations between the two domains. Drawing on the transition theory, it views collaborative housing as a grassroots niche challenging the culture, structures, and practices of the dominant housing system. The evidence from three Finnish cases shows that while the established housing sector may adopt niche ideas and move the goal posts, structural and practical barriers remain and make the diffusion of collaborative housing difficult.
