Zoning regulations from the 1960s have left a legacy of single-use domains within the cities of Israel. As the core of the country's economy has changed, the old industrial parks present a particularly acute challenge and opportunity for town planners. This paper looks at how the transformation of this legacy to mixed-use domains can be leveraged to address issues of social justice, economic resilience and environmental sustainability while avoiding the traps of 'industrial gentrification'. The author presents the urban renewal of the Industrial Park of Kfar Saba, a town north of Tel Aviv in Israel, as a test case for diverse strategies involving architectural design, policy proposals and management reform.
