Successes and Challenges Using a Train-the-Trainer Approach: Educating Children About Nutrition and Physical Activity in After-School Programs

This article reviews the successes and challenges of a train-the-trainer model for educating elementary school children about nutrition and physical activity in an effort to combat the obesity epidemic. The incidence of people becoming overweight and obese is alarming, and especially so in school-aged children. It is important for family and consumer sciences (FCS) professionals to combat this trend with appropriate interventions. FCS professionals are experts at training and program implementation, and they can be informed by the lessons learned in this study. Programs that recruit appropriate staff (trainers), implement parsimonious curriculum, provide mentoring, and secure sustained funding likely will experience greater satisfaction with program implementation and evaluation.
