Self-esteem has held an honored place in popular conceptions of personal well-being since the 1960s. It has become a cultural standard for improving the lives of children. But, for decades, the protective and predictive value of self-esteem has been challenged by good research. Recent discoveries in positive psychology have made specific recommendations for personal flourishing that go beyond the narrow purview of self-esteem.
