'We are a Motley Crowd': Welsh Parliamentary Liberalism and the New Journalism of the 1890s

The New Journalism in Britain from the 1880s redefined the relationship between reporters and reported, extending both the role of the press and notions of individual celebrity. This article considers the use of this genre in reporting the fortunes of Liberal MPs as their party entrenched itself as the political establishment in Wales but lost power as a force for reform. It contends that press engagement with Liberal politics during Gladstone's final administration marked a cultural shift from the discourse of collective heroism to a more sceptical attitude to individuals who purported to speak for Wales. It argues that New Journalism, originally the preserve of Conservative-leaning newspapers in Wales, eventually induced those who espoused the Liberal cause to lose faith in it.
