The rise of the Denbighshire coalfield helped wrest economic leadership in north-east Wales away from Flintshire and the lower Dee estuary. The records from the Erddig estate, near Wrexham, allow us to illuminate part of this intra-regional economic shift to the beginning of the eighteenth century and test ideas about landowners' participation in the development of mineral resources in the region. Active coal mining spanned 1715–1877 at Erddig. This, and other leases for minerals, transformed the estate's financial base and substantially financed and enabled the domain over two centuries. This analysis expands our view of the mineral owners' place in the investment process and the evolution of commercial relationships.
