This article explores the reclamation of land in Wales that was made derelict by industry, estimated as totalling seventy-nine square miles by 1971–2. It examines the origins of reclamation and discusses why little reclamation occurred before the 1960s, before charting why it then emerged as a high-profile activity. It outlines the nature of the problem, before considering the course of reclamation and its physical, economic and psychological impacts. It argues that reclamation changed the appearance of many areas for the better, created a better living environment and had some economic impact. However, it also reflected Wales's transition to a largely postindustrial economy and its relative economic decline.
