Founded in 1950 as a Welsh-language journal, Llên Cymru's editorial purpose is to publish the highest-quality academic research on Welsh literature of any period, and it welcomes research in the form of both scholarly and opinion-based articles. The journal includes full-length articles, a notes section for short contributions, and book reviews. Typically, articles can incorporate research on early Welsh poetry, twentieth-century Welsh literature and traditional Welsh folk tales.

Ers ei sefydlu yn 1950, Llên Cymru yw'r prif gylchgrawn academaidd yn ymwneud â llenyddiaeth Gymraeg. Mae'n cyhoeddi ymdriniaethau academaidd o'r safon uchaf yn ymwneud â llenyddiaeth Gymraeg o unrhyw gyfnod, ar ffurf erthyglau ysgolheigaidd neu feirniadol, neu olygiadau o destunau. Cyhoeddir hefyd adolygiadau ar gyhoeddiadau yn ymwneud â llenyddiaeth Gymraeg, gan gynnwys adolygiadau ar gyfrolau perthnasol a gyhoeddwyd mewn ieithoedd heblaw'r Gymraeg. Mae'r cylchgrawn hefyd yn cynnwys adran nodiadau ar gyfer cyfraniadau byrion.
