The newspaper press in Wales has been understood as having played a key role in shaping the cultural and political identity of the country. There is, however, insufficient empirical work to sustain many of the generalizations that have been made about the press in Wales. There has been some notable work on press history and structure in Wales, but this needs to be built on. This article therefore outlines the structure of the contemporary press in Wales. It examines the nature of assertions about the Welsh press by surveying aspects of the content of the press and critical issues such as the 'information gap', and the influence of the press on politics, national identity and the Welsh language. In all of these cases the empirical foundations of these assertions are criticized. It argues that we do not know enough about how the press operates in contemporary Welsh society nor about the ways in which it has been implicated in social transformation in Wales. It calls for a more sustained programme of research into the newspaper press so as to place it in proper relation to the wide range of factors with which it has interacted in Welsh society.
